Here’s a link to an essay about him I found on Ravi Zacharias’ excellent website. The Church’s anti-intellectualism turned off the ultra-inquisitive young genius and may have helped precipitate his brief flirtation with the Manichee movement. Interesting to hear the bishop Consentius say “God is not to be sought after by reason but followed through authority.” I think it is more likely that God gave you your brain (which is, I hope you realize, the most complex object in the known universe BY FAR) because he wanted you to use it. As Augustine siad “Heaven forbid that God should hate in us that by which he made us superior to the animals! Heaven forbid that we should believe in such a way as not to accept or seek reasons, since we could not even believe if we did not possess rational souls.”
